At the Firm
The CCMI team enjoyed training on neuro-linguistic programming in February to learn how to better communicate with each other and clients, as well as a training in March on our culture of accountability. We are always looking to improve for our clients, and these trainings are part of that process.
Brian, Matt, Tina, and Katie attended a meeting with Kevin Gordon, Schwab’s Head of Macro Research and Strategy. It was a chance to learn from his most recent research and ask him questions we can use as we evaluate the always-fluctuating economic conditions and investment markets.
The advisors at CCMI spent an education day focused on retirement and taxes. All team members registered with various regulatory authorities must comply with California’s mandate for investment advisors to obtain 12 continuous education credits in specific areas. This education day allowed the team to satisfy half of those credit hours. Topics included best practices and strategies for tax planning, including strategic beneficiary options for retirement accounts, gifting, withdrawal strategies, and important information regarding new tax laws for 2026.
Brian attended the Schwab Advantage conference in Scottsdale, Arizona. The conference brings leaders of independent advisory firms together to learn about changes at Schwab, provide feedback to them on their services, and learn from keynote speakers. Much of the focus was on AI and how others are incorporating it into their businesses.
Matt had a unique opportunity through his Vistage group of business owners to spend a day at Camp Pendleton this month. They learned about the site’s history, what role it plays in the Marine recruit training process and the many areas of combat and professional education Marines receive. Matt and his peers had several Q&A sessions with various groups of Marines, where the Marines asked about transitioning out of the Corps and into the civilian workforce.
After the informational sessions, another highlight was getting to go on the live-fire rifle range, receive instruction from Marines, and shoot at a 50-meter target, followed by a 90-minute adventure through some of the obstacle courses Marines must navigate as a part of their 54-hour “Crucible” that ends their four-week training at Camp Pendleton. It was a fascinating experience!
Kim helped facilitate the tax preparation process with the support and collaboration of her teammates. As tax season approaches, our team is working behind the scenes to help make the preparation process as smooth as possible for our clients, including coordinating with tax professionals, gathering relevant information, and helping answer questions about investment activity.
Alana has officially been inaugurated into the Junior League of San Diego’s training committee. This month, she has been co-hosting a variety of events with seasoned members of the committee before creating her own.
On the Home Front
Brian, Nikki, and the kids have been loving the warmer weather this spring. The family enjoyed watching Kai (16) compete in his last high school surf competition, and Koa (13) play flag football on Friday nights. Emma (18) continues to have wonderful experiences in college, taking weekend getaways that have included ice climbing in Colorado, a trip to Oahu to stay at her roommate’s house, and a trip to Arches National Park in southern Utah.
Matt and his family enjoyed a week of warm-weather skiing in Mammoth, where the lift lines were all quite short but with no fresh snow, unfortunately. The family came back with colds that knocked everyone out for a few days — ‘tis the season! The Showleys also hosted a baby shower at their home for Matt’s cousin in late March.
Kim and Alana met up with a client and her friends for the Hot Chocolate 5K in downtown San Diego. It was a beautiful morning for 3.1 miles, finishing with a mug of hot chocolate, chocolate fondue, and other treats. Funds raised through the event help support programs that provide sports training and competitions for people with intellectual disabilities.
The Vieregg family went on their annual ski trip to Deer Valley and, despite the less-than-optimal conditions, enjoyed themselves and made the best of it. They also had family visitors; it’s always fun to show them around the city. They celebrated Sara’s birthday in early March and spent time on their sailboat enjoying the beautiful weather. Tina attended an inspiring Susan G. Komen Impact luncheon.
Monica spent a long weekend in March in Colorado visiting Cole and Megan. The newlyweds bought a new home, and Monica was excited to be their first houseguest. Mike spent two weeks in Wisconsin taking care of things for his mom and spending time with childhood friends. Mike and Monica have been working outside their home painting, cleaning, and gardening in hopes of lots of flowers in the spring!
Abby had a busy month that included meeting with family and friends every weekend. There was lots of running around and eating out, but she enjoys the special time she gets to spend with everyone. She also had a week of dog sitting, with a friend’s dog joining hers, which always makes for a busier schedule to fit in all the dog walks. Abby enjoyed every minute of the chaos.
Jessica Hurley’s girls have kept their parents busy this month! Olivia performed with her jazz band at Biola University, where the group earned a silver rating. She also danced in all three of her school’s variety show performances, making her parents especially proud. Meanwhile, Gigi has been busy making waves and logging miles! She earned several ribbons at recent swim meets and received an award for completing 50 miles in running club. Jessica also chaperoned Gigi’s class field trip to the zoo, where she had a blast watching her energetic troop of eight-year-olds monkey around.
Katie and family spent the month at all their favorite haunts. One highlight included an evening spent at the Inn at Rancho Santa Fe celebrating one of Katie’s oldest friend’s birthdays. It was a great time catching up with old friends and creating new memories.
Alana went back to Washington to visit her best friend’s new baby. This is their first baby, and she loved her new role as “auntie.” She helped around the house and ran errands as the new mother recovered. She is very excited for her friend’s next chapter and knows they will be great parents!
This month, Kyle and his family were able to visit his family in Arizona. The kids enjoyed playing with all their cousins and getting to see the extended family. Brooks was excited to start baseball in February, which has kept them busy on the weekends. Hallie also got to attend a princess-themed birthday party and had the best time!
The year has started out really well for Joe Oryang’s family. They have spent time together going to the beach as much as possible and exploring the area whenever they can. It has been a good time, and they’re grateful for these moments.
