OUT & ABOUT February 2026

27 Feb 2026 by: CCMI

At the Firm

The CCMI team concluded our second annual fitness challenge in mid-February. We opened and closed the challenge with a workout at Fitness Quest 10 in Scripps Ranch. Team members had ways to track their workouts, competing to see who could accumulate the most effort points and weighing in before and after to see who had the biggest metric transformation. Congrats to Jessica on racking up the most effort points and to Brian for a narrow victory in the biggest metric transformation. One way our team is accountable to our clients is to bring the healthiest versions of ourselves to work and the fitness challenge was a great way to stay focused!

Brian, Matt, and Jessica have been working hard on the firm’s compliance aspects as the new year requires updated filings. Clients can expect to receive a copy of our updated ADV, Form CRS, and privacy statement by the end of March.

Matt has been busy populating various benchmarking studies, which helps us manage the firm effectively compared to other registered investment advisors. The data helps the partners determine what we are doing well and how we can improve our service for clients. Matt also helped lead the CCMI team through a session to learn more about neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) to help us better communicate internally and with clients. He attended a similar session through his Vistage group last fall and knew the team wanted to learn more about this approach to communication.

Kim‘s role as the chair of the Grotarian Committee means she coordinates events to help newer Rotarians connect with each other. One of those events brought together college-age Rotarians and members of the San Diego Rotary club to a San Diego Seals professional lacrosse game. There were 30 in total and Kim, Tyler, and her friend Ashley had a blast!

Alana and Katie attended the San Diego Financial Planning Association’s January Summit, where they heard from speakers on topics including Medicare planning, annuities, and using personality assessments to better serve our clients. They also learned about mitigating sequence of return risk, explored tax-saving strategies, and participated in a workshop that helped them better understand their individual thinking styles and how to use those strengths when collaborating.

On the Home Front

Brian and Nikki enjoyed having their daughter Emma (18) and eight of her friends join them in San Diego for a long weekend. The house was full of chaos and people sleeping everywhere but it was so much fun having college students from all over. After the students returned to school, Brian, Nikki, Kai (16), and Koa (13) enjoyed snowboarding in Brian Head, Utah, for three days in mid-February. It snowed every day; on the last day over two feet of snow fell, making for some fun (and challenging) skiing conditions. The boys did great and have quickly improved their skills.

Matt and his family took a four-day trip to Mammoth in mid-February to enjoy some time on the slopes. They were fortunate to get some snow while they were there. Jacob in particular has taken to skiing and thankfully Matt can still keep up with him for the time being. Mammoth is always a favorite getaway so it was great to be back up there! Matt and Alex along with several friends had a fun day at the Farmer’s Open, where they had great weather and got to watch the winning golfer for several holes.

Kim enjoyed the warm weather by starting to ride her bike again. Her parents were in town to escape the cold Maine winter, so they and Tyler met up with her after her rides to have breakfast together.

February was a month full of celebrations for the Larsons. Monica and her extended family celebrated her brother’s 60th birthday with a surprise party at a local steakhouse. Mike and Monica celebrated 33 years of marriage on lucky Friday the 13th, enjoying a nice Italian dinner in South Park and browsing vinyl records at a nearby store. Mike’s mom celebrated her 89th birthday in her new apartment. Monica and her “coffee group” celebrated their friendships with a beautiful beachview brunch and exchanged belated Christmas gifts, which is fun to do.

Abby had a wonderful month. She traveled with her girlfriends to Costa Rica, having an amazing time. They did many excursions, including horseback riding, hiking, and ziplining Superman style, which even Abby — not being a thrill seeker — absolutely loved. The country is a favorite of hers so she will surely visit again. With traveling and being busy with everything else, it’s been a good start to the year!

The Hurleys squeezed in a quick camping trip to Julian with friends, soaking up everything they love: hiking the trails, cooking outdoors, and throwing it back to the ’90s with laser tag.
Back at home, they’ve been enjoying a special visit from their aunt, who is in town from southern England for three weeks. Olivia signed up for her school’s variety show with two friends. She’s putting together a ballet piece performed to live piano and vocals, which has added a new layer of rehearsals to her already busy activity schedule!

This month, Katie, Ben, and the girls enjoyed getting back into their routine while Katie continued to push through her studying for the CFP® exam. Some fun highlights included a daddy-daughter dance, exercising so Katie doesn’t come in last in the CCMI team fitness challenge, and feeding the ducks at Lake Murray.

Alana had an eventful and memorable month. She was glad to get back into her workout routine and recently joined an Ultimate Frisbee league that plays every Saturday in Coronado. She also took her first trip to Catalina Island, camping for two nights at Two Harbors. It was one of the most beautiful campsites she has ever visited, with crystal-clear water, a dolphin greeting committee, and the constant, charming sound of sea lions barking throughout the day.

Joe has been busy watching a lot of sports in person and at home and staying active with his family. The Oryangs have also been trying to visit new places in San Diego since they still haven’t seen a lot of the area.

The highlight of the month for Kyle‘s family was taking a day trip to Disneyland to celebrate Hallie’s 4th birthday! The kids were so excited to experience the different rides, meet various Disney characters, and enjoy a variety of treats. Everyone was exhausted by the end of the day but looks forward to going back.
