Out & About September 2024

At The Firm

The CCMI team enjoyed celebrating third quarter birthdays at a lunch in September. Team members always enjoy the chance to get outside of the office for an hour and spend time together.

Brian attended an event to listen to author Francesc Miralles discuss the research that went into his book, “Ikigai — The Japanese Secret to a Long & Happy Life.” It was an interesting presentation about finding your purpose in life.

Matt attended the Insiders’ Forum financial planning conference in Denver, Colo., where he heard from many leaders in the financial planning profession. It was a great conference and Matt brought back several new ideas for CCMI to implement in our planning and business practices.

As a co-chair on the Grotarian committee of Rotary Club 33, Kim’s year started off strong with several events in September, including a happy hour, a walkthrough of event space for a future event, and a Rotary 101 session held at the CCMI office with a dozen Rotarians to learn more about the history of Rotary. Kim enjoys being more involved in her second year, getting to know more people, and looks forward to the exciting year ahead!

Tina has been accepted into San Diego’s LEAD Impact class of 2025, an immersive 10-month program aimed at creating a network of leaders equipped with the skills, insight, and passion needed to work collaboratively across industries and issues facing our region. At the firm, we’ve been busy addressing client questions on the economy, stock and bond market, and strategies heading into year end.

On the Home Front

Brian’s family is getting back into the swing of being in school again. Emma is now a senior and Kai is a freshman at the same high school, while Koa has started middle school in the 6th grade.  The Matter kids have settled back into a school routine; the boys are both busy with sports while Emma is focused on applying to college.

Matt has spent several weekends taking his son Jacob to the beach since Jacob’s interest in surfing sprung up over the summer. Having never surfed himself, Matt is really enjoying his time in the water as Jacob’s personal lifeguard and being his chauffeur to and from the beach. In mid-September, Matt also attended a family wedding in Pittsburgh, Penn., a quick trip as he had to fly to Denver for a conference immediately afterward.

Kim and Tyler traveled to Kim’s hometown in northern Maine to visit her family. After a few days of visiting with family, they all drove five hours to southern Maine to spend a week at the beach. Every beach trip involves a puzzle, which they completed just before the last day of their trip. They always enjoy seeing friends and family when they visit Maine!

Tina and Dave spent a week sailing up the coast, stopping in Oceanside Harbor, Newport Harbor, and various anchorages around Catalina island. It was the perfect week for hiking, swimming, and enjoying other various activities on the water!

Football season is back, and Monica is happy to watch games with family and friends to cheer on her favorite teams! Monica had a girls’ night out with friends at a new restaurant called Leila in North Park and was blown away by the décor and atmosphere along with the food and drinks, which were outstanding. At the end of the month, Monica spent a weekend on a retreat at Whispering Winds, a camp in the mountains near Julian; it was a special respite and she returned feeling refreshed.

Abby continues to have a busy summer, ending the month with celebrating her youngest daughter’s birthday with all her kids and going to the beach for the first time all season. The warmth of the day and ocean water were very enjoyable. Abby felt like she had celebrations all month long. She is looking forward to an upcoming trip and the holidays being around the corner.

The Hurleys enjoyed the great outdoors camping with friends. They enjoyed hiking Stonewall Peak and swimming in the falls, followed by a taco fiesta, compliments of Mike, chef extraordinaire. The kids formed an old-timey scooter gang and patrolled the park in search of hawk feathers and other excellent treasures. Olivia and Gigi are both enjoying the start of the school year and have joined the morning Running Club and after-school cooking classes.

September was a fun month for the Willifords. They went to a Padres game and had a great time! It was the girls’ first game and now Ansley loves to yell “GO PADRES” at random times throughout the day. They also celebrated Ansley’s third birthday with a trip to a farm. They took a behind-the-scenes tour that included Ansley feeding different animals. Mackenzie started crawling and it has been a joy to watch her hit her milestones!

Alana had a fantastic month! She took a trip to Capitola to celebrate her 10-year anniversary with her best friend. They were randomly assigned as dorm-mates in 2014, and since then they’ve been inseparable. Each year, they enjoy a tradition they call “surf camp,” which involves early morning surf sessions, a lunch break, and a sunset session over a long weekend. Although they were suited up and ready to hit the waves, the weather didn’t cooperate this time. As a result, surf camp turned into a delightful tour of Santa Cruz and Capitola, where they explored local music venues, visited artist street vendors, and soaked up the vibrant atmosphere of the area.
