OUT & ABOUT– July 2023

27 Jul 2023 by: CCMI

At the Firm

The CCMI Team spent a day in July at our Annual Business Planning Meeting.  This years meeting was held at the University Club in downtown San Diego with a beautiful view of downtown and planes landing at the San Diego airport.  The CCMI team discussed how we learn and work together, our vision and goals for the year, along with the team’s favorite session called “I wish” where the team can make any suggestion they think will improve our service for our clients or make CCMI an even better place to work. We finished the day with CCMI team trivia where Abby and Brian were the big winners for the day!

CCMI sponsored a hole at the Coryell Golf Classic which supports the National City Boys and Girls Club. Brian enjoyed the day on the golf course supporting the cause and celebrating Don Coryell, who will be inducted into the pro football hall of fame this summer.

The new CCMI office location is nearing completion with only a few weeks to go. We will be sure to keep clients up to date as to when our move will take place, which is likely in the second half of August. We are very excited for the new space!

Kim has been working with several other CCMI team members streamlining various processes related to tax planning. She is looking forward to seeing how these changes help add efficiencies to year-end tax planning for clients

Kim attended her final Women in Business board retreat as she has decided to continue as a member, but step down from the board. As the Membership co-chair, she was able to help the group reach growth goals coming out of the pandemic. Kim is now attending weekly Rotary meetings and is looking to get more involved as time goes on.

Rebalancing client portfolios was the focus for the month as well as continuing to provide guidance through financial planning. Tina participated in a webinar hosted by an industry expert in tax planning that highlighted the new rules and benefits of 529 plans, including the ways individual states apply the rules, which vary widely. A 529 plan can be a great way to pay for higher education expenses as well as provide a legacy for generations to come.

On the Home Front

The Matter Family enjoyed hosting a 4th of July party this year. When they bought their house in Poway back in 2021, the previous owners and neighbors all said the 4th was a special time at the house because they shoot off the fireworks right behind the backyard fence. The firework explosions look like they are right overhead and it feels like a private show.

The Showley family traveled to London and Amsterdam for 12 days in late June, the first time overseas for Lizzie and Jacob. They visited most of the sights in London and enjoyed some excellent restaurants, but the highlight was a day spent outside of the city in Henley on the Thames River, where they enjoyed a morning on a small riverboat, followed by a tour through a large English estate and afternoon tea.

In Amsterdam they visited with friends who moved there several years ago, took a cruise along the canals, and went to several museums and parks to stay cool in the hot weather.  They also dodged thousands of cyclists while walking the city!

As part of their 4th of July holiday, Kim, Tyler, and their friends participated in the Scripps Ranch Old Pros run and bike ride. Tyler did the 10k run in under an hour, which was his goal, and Kim completed the 35-mile bike ride. Kim also attended her first yoga retreat in Fallbrook with some friends and enjoyed great conversations, yummy food, and a relaxing time, with the exception of a cold plunge!

Tina and Dave are the proud owners of a new (to them) Beneteau Oceanis sailboat. They happily left the “dark side” of power boating to return to their love of sailing. They also attended their niece’s wedding in Cleveland and enjoyed spending time with their extended family and friends.

July was full of fun adventures for the Larsons. Early in the month, Monica spent a day in Tijuana with girlfriends shopping, getting manicures, and having lunch at the famous Caesar’s Restaurant, where they enjoyed having a Caesar salad made tableside. Monica and Mike spent the 4th of July riding bikes while enjoying the Coronado parade, relaxing on a boat, and attending an evening BBQ with fireworks. They also attended a wedding in Valle de Guadalupe (Baja California) that included a weekend stay in Ensenada. One day later, they boarded a plane for vacation to celebrate another wedding, Monica’s birthday, and their 30th wedding anniversary. More to come on their vacation to England and Scotland next month.

Abby had a busy July, with the long 4th of July weekend holiday, which was another staycation. She enjoyed visits with her kids, got a lot done at home, and had a nice barbeque on the 4th. She also was able to visit her daughter in Orange County, helping her move some furniture around, which was quite a job, and then enjoyed a nice dinner. Abby also attended a girlfriend’s wedding celebration and went to a family graduation party. It’s the season for celebrations! Abby is loving that the weather is finally warmer and looking forward to enjoying the beach a little more.

Jessica’s family attended the Harry Potter-themed Padres game. It was a blast aside from the Hagrid- sized line to collect their Hogwarts House Padres hats. Gigi and Olivia each performed dance routines at the SD County Fair. They were treated to the fair’s butterfly farm after their performances. Butterflies softly landed on their hair and dresses; the girls said it was the best day ever! Jessica and Mike enjoyed a night out to see Passengers at the Old Globe. The Hurley family spent Independence Day weekend paddleboarding and kayaking on the bay with friends before enjoying several evenings of fireworks shows.

Katie, Ben, and Ansley spent their weekends with family, going to barbecues, and enjoying the lovely weather at the beach. Ansley has grown comfortable in the backyard pool and has gained confidence to let the water go over her feet at the beach. She is enamored with beach sand and could spend countless hours playing in it. For the 4th of July, on the day before the holiday, they participated in an Independence Day Parade at her daycare. It is always a treat when Katie and Ben get to surprise Ansley in the middle of the day for a special event.

Alana celebrated her birthday with a night at the disco at San Diego’s House of Blues. The venue occasionally hosts a “Gimme! Gimme! Disco” event featuring iconic artists such as Abba, Michael Jackson, Tina Turner, and Diana Ross. Alana had an amazing time dressing up and celebrating the year with her friends.

To make her birthday even more memorable, Alana’s sister surprised her with a skydiving trip! Skydiving was never something Alana had considered before but she was effectively peer pressured into jumping out of a perfectly good plane. However, she now highly recommends adding it to everyone’s bucket list, as it proved to be both a terrifying and liberating experience.
