At the Firm
CCMI finished its Healthy Living 8 Week Challenge that we started in January and Monica was the winner with the most effort points. Great job Monica! As part of the challenge, the CCMI team kicked it off with a workout at Fitness Quest 10 in Scripps Ranch, did a body composition analysis, and received MyZone straps to monitor physical activity. The team could see on an app each participant’s effort points which helped to motivate others. The competition was a good way to kick off the year and help strengthen the team.
CCMI enjoyed a March Madness potluck to enjoy a lunch time together and talk trash about who was going to win the annual tournament challenge.
Brian, Matt and Kim attended a Dimensional Funds luncheon to better understand some of their new offerings and research.
Brian attended the FPA/CFA Wealth Management Symposium to hear from chief investment officers from various investment companies.
Matt attended a three-day practice management conference in Scottsdale, Ariz. The conference was for firm leaders from around the country and included presentations from Schwab’s Liz Ann Sonders, author Peter Zeihan, and futurist Sheryl Connelly. It was an excellent event and Matt learned several things that will benefit CCMI and our clients going forward.
Kim participated in a virtual conference with her Financial Transitionist community. They went in-depth into topics including life-changing events such as sudden job loss and how advisors can be helpful to clients who lost their homes in the LA fires. Kim enjoys this community as it is made up of a group of caring advisors around the country (and world) who share ideas on an ongoing basis so everyone can all bring the best to their clients.
Tax planning and preparation is in full swing at the firm. Although the focus is on preparing last year’s tax returns, the firm is forward-focused in planning and strategizing for tax savings in the current year as well. Tina attended North County Estate Planning Council, which featured interesting speakers from a law office that specializes in settling estates and dealing with the complexities that can often be avoided. Tina also continues her work with San Diego’s LEAD Impact program, working with the San Diego Fire and Rescue Foundation on board governance.
On the Home Front
Brian and Nikki are spending a lot of time at the sporting fields in March as Kai has 2 to 3 high school baseball games a week and Koa has 1 to 2 flag football games a week. It is fun to watch the kids improve each week and find joy doing something they love.
Matt took his daughter Lizzie (13) and a friend for a two-day ski trip to Big Bear. They had a fun first day with a very empty mountain, followed by seven inches of fresh snow overnight and into the second day. While the fresh snow was a delight for a bunch of San Diego natives, the visibility was so bad they weren’t able to ski on the second day. Everyone managed to have fun playing in the snow and a few snowballs found their way toward Matt — and Lizzie.
Kim and Tyler enjoyed a ski trip to Park City, where they met up with friends from the East Coast. While they were geared up for cold weather, the conditions felt like spring with sunny days and mild temperatures. They visited their favorite food spots and did other activities like snowshoeing with a guide Alisha and Penguin the dog!
Tina and her family travelled to Miami, Fla., to attend the wedding of their nephew Matt to his bride Kayla. It was a magical evening in a beautiful outdoor setting with many fun surprises throughout the night, including an amazing father/daughter dance and a visit from a very large iguana during the ceremony. Afterwards, Tina and Dave, along with a few friends and family members, made their way to Key West, where they explored the town on bikes, stopping at local spots featuring live music from indie artists and visiting museums while soaking up the authentic Keys vibe.
Monica and Mike hosted family from Wisconsin this month. Their niece and nephew spent a week in sunny San Diego and were happy to be out of the cold. They went to Balboa Park, SD Zoo, and multiple beaches. They spent an afternoon taking the ferry from Coronado to San Diego. The kids loved playing cards in the evening and sampling food from various local favorites.
Abby had a good month settling into her new place and acclimating to the new neighborhood. Her best friend from her hometown came to visit, and they had a fun weekend in San Diego. Abby also was able to go on her yearly Las Vegas trip with another girlfriend. This year they attended a concert, walked around town, had a couple of nice meals, and even got some pool time. It’s a fun tradition for them, and they enjoyed their time together.
The Hurleys enjoyed a couple of fun-filled days in Julian. The family had a few snowball fights and built a couple snowmen. Between adventures in the snow, they defrosted in the cabin, reading, building with modeling clay, and playing the silly card game Taco, Cat, Goat, Cheese, Pizza. Jessica also volunteered through PTA helping to set up a leprechaun-themed book fair complete with pots of gold, because “reading for pleasure is better than treasure.”
This month, the Willifords rode the wild ride that is sick season with many of their fellow parent friends. The highs and lows of potty training have hit us hard. The couch will never be the same. Send help.
This month, Alana wrapped up the CCMI fitness challenge with an exciting milestone — running her first half marathon alongside a friend. The race took place near Bellevue, Wash., and she was grateful for clear skies and the beautiful scenery along the trail. To her surprise, she loved the experience, crossing the finish line with pure joy. She just might do it again!
This month has been full of tee ball practices and games for the Klines. Brooks has been having so much fun this year and improving every week. Mom and Dad are very proud of him! The kids enjoyed reading week at their preschool. Each day was a theme from a Dr. Seuss book and they really enjoyed wacky hair day! The family was also asked to babysit a friend’s bunny Poppi for a week. Brooks and Hallie enjoyed coming home from school to spend time holding him and following him around the house. It’s unsure if Poppi enjoyed it!
It was a good month for the Oryangs as they spent a lot of time together outdoors. This included long walks, going to the pool, and playing at the park. Joe had a birthday, so he and Kendra went alone to Santa Barbara for the weekend and stopped at the Getty on the way. It was a beautiful trip with many amazing places visited and memories made.
