Out & About June 2024

At the Firm

Brian wrapped up his multiyear service on the San Diego Breakfast Rotary Foundation board, where he worked to oversee the investments and ensure the foundation’s gifting was aligned with its bylaws. Brian was grateful for the opportunity to serve but is also happy to be rolling off the board!

Brian played in the Don Coryell Golf Classic, which supports the Boys & Girls Club in National City. CCMI sponsored the hole-in-one hole but there were no lucky winners this year. The tournament successfully raised funds for the charity, and all participants had a fun golf outing.

Matt played in a charity golf tournament benefiting CalCPA’s foundation with a number of local CPAs. Originally intended to be after the traditional April 15 tax deadline, the tournament is a time for CPAs and other advisors to meet up for a round of golf and raise money for the CPA foundation but this year it fell in the middle of tax season due to the California extension.

Kim attended the annual AICPA Engage conference with about 5,000 other attendees. She heard updates and best practices about various topics like the use of AI in the industry and taxes, IRAs, and Medicare, to name a few. Kim’s sister Kathy met up with her and they took a side trip to Hoover Dam after the conference — allowing her to enjoy some fun and family once her work commitment was over.

Tina attended the NorCal Conference for two days in May. This annual event, now in its 52nd year, is organized by the Financial Planning Association and serves as a significant gathering for financial planning professions. The theme this year was “Embrace Change,” reflecting the focus on current and upcoming trends in the industry. Keynote speakers included Kristi Yamaguchi, Olympic gold medalist and founder of Kristi Yamaguchi’s Always Dream, and Mellody Hobson, co-CEO of Ariel Investments, board member of Starbucks and JP Morgan Chase and a prominent advocate for financial literacy and education. There were many takeaways gathered from industry leaders and peers that will be exciting to implement at the firm.

On the Home Front

The Matter family has been busy as the school year wraps up. Brian, Nikki and Koa spent a long weekend in Cancun, Mexico where they celebrated Koa’s 12th birthday (a bit early).  They spent their days at various adventure parks in the area where activities included all things adrenaline related – speed boats, zip lines, ropes courses, cliff jumping, water slides and swimming through underground rivers. Brian and Nikki enjoyed dedicated time to their youngest child.  In mid-June, Brian also led a trip with a youth group that Koa is in to Channel Islands National Park for a few days of kayaking, snorkeling and hiking. It was a great trip but everyone was excited to get back to their homes so they could take a shower after multiple days of roughing it!

Matt and his family went to Hawaii for a week in mid-June to celebrate the end of the school year and visit family. They had a great time revisiting many of their favorite hangouts on the North Shore of Oahu, and this year they took the kids to see the Pearl Harbor Memorial and Museum, which was very impactful. Matt’s grandfather was in the Navy at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 and helped rescue sailors in the water and trapped in ships.

Kim and Tyler visited Switzerland and France with two of their close friends. They started their trip hiking the Alps in the Interlaken area and drove through the eastern part of France. They enjoyed food and wine in the Alsace region, Bourgogne region, Lyon, and Annecy and flew back from Geneva. Kim lived and worked in France from 2005 to 2007 so was thrilled to meet up with friends and one of her former colleagues hosted them for a traditional beef bourguignon dinner at their home in Lyon. It was a trip they had planned to take in 2020 that definitely lived up to all the anticipation!

It was a major celebration month for the Vieregg family! In May, Sara graduated with a master’s degree in marriage and family therapy from the University of San Diego. She’ll be finishing her practicum this summer at Rady’s Children’s Hospital and will then be taking the next steps to becoming a licensed marriage and family therapist. Following Sara’s graduation celebration, the Viereggs went to San Francisco to visit Hanna, bringing Dave’s mother, Marianne, with them.  Marianne lived in San Francisco after college, so it was fun to have three generations share stories about their experiences in the city. They ate at a restaurant in Sausalito that Marianne had been to 40 years ago! They also went to Napa, drove down Lombard Street, hiked in Presidio National Park, got a beverage at the St. Francis Yacht Club, bought sourdough bread at the factory, visited Ghirardelli Square, and enjoyed the night sky and a dessert from the top of the Mark Restaurant. It was a wonderful trip. Memories were made!

Dave and Tina celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary in June! In some ways, it’s hard for them to believe it’s been 30 years already but when looking back at everything they have done over the years, it seems like a lifetime! They are looking forward to the next 30 years!

Monica and her friends had a fabulous potluck party to celebrate all the June birthdays in the group. They spent an evening laughing and reminiscing about their years of friendship. Monica and Alex treated Mike to a BBQ dinner and a day without chores for Father’s Day. At the end of the month, Monica attended a brunch and book reading with a “New York Times” bestselling author who shared her inspiring story of how she lost everything due to addiction, survived, and rebuilt her life.

June continued to be a busy month for Abby with many graduations and parties. She attended a local concert and also went to Disneyland to watch her daughter in the parade, which was very enjoyable. A highlight for Abby was getting to meet her niece’s new baby when they visited from out of town, so it was very special to spend time with them.

The Hurleys celebrated the end of the school year at beach and pool parties with great friends. Then they headed to Palm Desert for a few days to unwind and bask in the (long-awaited) warm summer sunshine before Olivia and Gigi started their packed summer activity schedules. They spent the trip swimming, watercolor painting, and playing ping pong. The girls also won a poolside scavenger hunt with the team name The Fearless Finders!

This month, the Willifords celebrated the life of Katie‘s grandpa. While the grief is present, it was really moving to acknowledge and be a part of the legacy her grandma and grandpa built together. Other happenings of the month included Father’s Day celebrations, Mackenzie turning six months old, and of course many dance parties with a semi-feral two-and-a-half-year-old!

This month, Alana has been relishing the start of summer, which means she’s taken a break from her studies to venture outdoors and catch some beautiful sunsets. Interestingly, most of her close friends celebrate their birthdays during this time. Alana recently traveled to Seattle to watch her friends perform in their respective bands. The musical lineup was diverse, ranging from hard instrumental rock to folk and even surf rock classics. It was a joyous experience to be surrounded by such creativity while celebrating her friends. Additionally, Alana cheered on a friend who ran her first half-marathon at the San Diego Rock and Roll Marathon. Witnessing her friend’s success served as a great inspiration for Alana, adding to the uplifting spirit of support and celebration among her circle

Allie and Gus celebrated their fourth wedding anniversary in early June with a nice dinner out. They also had family in town who were visiting San Diego for the first time. They explored Coronado, Torrey Pines, and Point Loma, and tried out several breweries around the area. Everyone enjoyed the many hiking options and beautiful scenery.
