What should you do?
Report any suspicious IRS related communication by visiting this website https://www.irs.gov/uac/report-phishing.
If you suspect that you have been a victim of identity theft, contact the IRS Identity Protection Specialized Unit at (800) 908-4490. Also, be sure to report the situation to at least one of the three major credit reporting bureaus so they can put a fraud alert on your credit account. Contact the Federal Trade Commission at www.ftc.gov as well.
Lastly, resources are available through the California Office of Privacy Protection to help individuals who have been victims of identity theft of any kind. You may visit the following website for more information: https://oag.ca.gov/idtheft/information-sheets.
As tax season is in full swing, we want you to be educated on the latest tax scams and vigilant in protecting your personal information.
