Have a Hopeful Holiday!

18 Dec 2020 by: Kim Benson

We always have something to be grateful for, even during what has been a noteworthy 2020, to say the least. While it was out of the ordinary, this year has helped us realize what really matters. Maintaining a connection with loved ones (albeit virtually) is important to all of us. In addition, this pause has inspired us to reflect on the things we value most in life. Some have had the good fortune of continuing to work in a safe environment or at home, while others have been dealt a crummy hand or have gotten the rug pulled out from under them as we live through this pandemic. What we all have in common is that we are in this together.

Having compassion for others is a good lesson from 2020; while we’ve all dealt with our share of inconveniences, many people started the year with challenges and will continue to struggle. The scale of the impact is unfathomable. The truth is, every year there are people having a “not-so-happy” holiday for various reasons. Some are going through the holidays alone, maybe they’ve lost someone close to them recently or are dealing with an unfortunate change in circumstances. Being there for them helps more than you know!

If you are struggling, chances are you have at least one person in your life who you can trust and turn to for support. Tell them frankly how much they mean to you and how grateful you are for their presence in your life. Look for ways to show them how much you care.

Being there for people can make a difference in their lives. Talk to your family more often and appreciate them, set up a Zoom meeting with friends you haven’t been able to see, find a lonely neighbor and drop off a small gift at their door. Call someone instead of text; it will be an unexpected surprise! Incorporate other family or friends in this activity and find ways to make someone’s day.

This pandemic has lasted longer than we all imagined. This game is in overtime and we are all ready to be done with it. While we continue to persevere, know that small acts of kindness can be the much-needed gift for someone during this holiday season!
