What is a CFP® Professional?

21 Feb 2019 by: Brian Matter

When choosing a financial professional to help you plan for your retirement and build your financial future, it is extremely important that you know how to make a wise choice. While anyone can provide financial advice, it takes proven, specialized knowledge to become a Certified Financial Planner™ professional. The Certified Financial Planner™ (or CFP®) designation is a prestigious certification mark that is owned and awarded by the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, Inc.

In order to achieve and keep the CFP® designation, a Certified Financial Planner™ practitioner must:

  1. Pass the comprehensive CFP® Certification Examination. This test is now 6 hours long and is comprised of the CFP® Board’s financial planning subject areas including insurance planning and risk management, employee benefits planning, investment planning, income tax planning, retirement planning, education planning, and estate planning.
  2. Each candidate must complete a number of advanced college-level courses of study addressing the financial planning subject areas that CFP Board’s studies have determined as necessary for the competent and professional delivery of financial planning services, and attain a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited United States college or university.
  3. Complete at least three years of full-time financial planning-related experience or two years of qualifying experience if following an apprenticeship pathway with additional requirements.
  4. Agree to be bound by CFP Board’s Standards of Professional Conduct, a set of documents outlining the ethical and practice standards for CFP® professionals.

Once the CFP® designation is obtained, the CFP® professional is required to complete 30 hours of continuing education every two years, including two hours of ethics related continuing education credits.  This helps the CFP® professional continue to learn and stay abreast of an ever-changing financial world.
